Chapter Nine

Tuesday, November 29th.

Lucky Strike Motel. North Las Vegas.

In the middle of the night, Annie had taken the bus from the strip and made it back to the motel long before the creep next door. Safe for the moment, but she had to find a different place to stay before he recognized her.

She showered off the blood and washed it out of her hair. She tossed her jeans and shirt into the shower with her and scrubbed off the blood. Nothing to change into, so when she hung them over the shower rod, she hoped they would be dry enough to wear in the morning.

Annie lay curled up naked in the bed in her room listening for the creeper to come back to his room next to hers. She would hear him open the door and close it again when he came in.

When he knocked her down in the alley behind the strip club and beat her head into the pavement, she’d scraped the skin off her left arm and hurt her recently damaged leg.

The lump on her head caused a dull ache, but nothing she couldn’t handle. She had nothing with her to fix her injuries but intended to drop by a drugstore first chance she got.

He’d killed another girl and there was nothing she could do to prevent it. Annie felt bad about the dead girl. She had tried to stop the creeper, but without a weapon or something to fight him with, she wasn’t strong enough to do any good. She searched the room for her Beretta and couldn’t find it.

Was the creeper in my room? Did he take my gun?I have to get to the safehouse as soon as it’s light.

Summerlin. Las Vegas.

There was no food in the house, only coffee and the carton of cream Mick went to the store to buy.

Misty was up early talking to Carmelita on the phone about Forest. When her call ended, she sat down at the kitchen table with Tommy and Mick, and they talked about the day ahead.

“Yesterday we made no progress,” said Misty, “because Annie wasn’t moving, and her energy stagnated in the bus shelter.”

“If she wasn’t moving does that mean she’s hurt, or somebody grabbed her, and she’s tied up and can’t get away?” asked Tommy with a pained expression on his face.

“Not necessarily,” said Misty. “It could be either one of those scenarios, or she might be resting and trying to sort things out in her head. She has to be going through an emotional trauma because of the amnesia.”

Tommy nodded. “I don’t want her to be hurt or hit by a fuckin bus, or held prisoner by the fuckin Brotherhood, or something.”

Listening to the possibilities Tommy was laying down, Mick looked like he might throw up.

With the morning news on the flat screen, Blaine and Farrell sat in the living room drinking coffee. The news anchor babbled away, then suddenly stopped to deliver a breaking bulletin.

“It seems the Machete Maniac has murdered his second victim in the City of Las Vegas.
